1 computer on whole network looses internet and sharing

R

Robbie

I'm encountering a frustrating problem on my network with one of our
computers.

The one computer loses the ability to surf the web or use any other
applications that connect to the internet. Additionally I am unable to
access file shares and printers from other windows computers.

About my network configuration:
PfSense Firewall >Cisco Switch>Netgear Wwitch>thetroubledcomputer

I can:
ping domains from command prompt
ping other computers or printers on the network from command prompt
ping our firewall <1ms from command prompt
I can access mapped network drives on our file server (linux - static ip,
network drives are mapped to IP not host name)
access shared files/foders on "thetroubledcomputer" from other computers on
the network

I can NOT
load a web browser and access the web interface for our firewall
load a web browser and access any other website
go to network places and view workgroups and computers

I sometimes can NOT
access any file/folder/printer shares on our other windows computers
print to a network printer where the driver is installed on
thetroubledcomputer (not a shared printer)
use the run box and type \\hostname or \\ipaddress, this just doesn't work
When I say sometimes, I mean most of the time. Sometimes it works but half
ass but typically I can't do these tasks.

I have TRIED
releasing/renewing ip many times,
repairing connection
choosing different ports on the Netgear Switch
different ports on the Cisco switch
running a brand new Cat5e cable (cut and crimped myself) to connect my
computer directly to the cisco switch (and bypassing the netgear switch)
rebooting

ERRORS:
when trying to access network groups/computers

Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an
application request.

It seems like rebooting sometimes helps. After doing so I was able to browse
the web and load live mail so I could access this newsgroup and type this
message.
However, rebooting has not always helped. By the time I finished typing this
message I had lost my ability to browse the web

Please advise :'(

A failing Ethernet card (or motherboard Ethernet functionality if
applicable) is a definite possibility from some of the symptoms you
described.

I just disabled the wake on lan feature. Hopefully that does it. If not I'll
try a new nic.

Disabling wake on lane didn't seem to make any difference so I will most
likely get a new nic.

I got a new nic today and at first everything seemed to be 100% normal.
However just a while later I started experiencing the same problems as
before. Any other ideas greatly appreciated.
[edit 2/27] I thought I sent this a few days ago but apparently my internet
died so it never went through.
