I bought a new laptop with WIndows XP Home and recently
had to buy the XP Pro upgrade. Does my license allow me
to now put the home editon that came with my Laptop on my
older Win 98 desktop? Do I have the license to put the
pro on my desktop too?
No your Windows XP Home Edition was preinstalled to your laptop and thus is
an OEM copy which may not be moved to any other machine .
Also since you used the upgrade edition of Window XP Professional you no
longer have a license to use Windows XP Home Edition on that laptop . The
upgrade is cheaper then the full version because your license to use the
previous operating system is subsumed into the license for Windows XP
Professional and thus is no more.
So you cannot use the Windows XP Home license on the desktop.
You also may not use the upgrade of Window XP Professional on the desktop
since all Windows opertaing system since Windows 3.1. are one license per
PC. So if you want to put Window XP on you desktop you will have to buy a
copy of that machine, either full retail or upgrade if the current operating
system on that machine qualifies.
