Windows XP home edition

I have Windows XP Home edition given to me for Xmas. The
box say for PCs without Windows, or PCs with Windows 95 or
earlier versions.

I have windows ME. Will this version work? If not, what
version do I need.

Thank you

Hi, That mean you have a full version. You may either upgrade from Windows
ME or do a full clean install. You have the right version. Just put the CD
in and you can start the install from within Windows ME.

Yes - you have a full version of Windows XP (as opposed to an upgrade-only
version), which can also be used to perform an upgrade.

No one said it, but if you can salvage (burn stuff onto CDs) what you
want to keep from your Millenium install, I would surely do a clean install
ONLY of Windows XP... In case you are wondering what that means; wipe all
traces of ME off the hard drive and do a clean install, not an 'upgrade'
install thru ME... I never bought into ME, so i don't know if you can
utilize the XP disc to format (wipe clean) and then install since you have
ME on the HD. I guess it would work just like installing a fresh copy of XP
.....(?) and would probably offer you that choice during the process,
although i am not sure. Luckily, whomever gave you the gift at Christmas
knew what they were buying and you have the full version.

Peter,
It has been my experience with doing many XP upgrades over different
versions of Windows that the upgrade is very close to a clean install when
done properly. The XP upgrade backs up the relative information and deletes
the Windows folder, and then after it clean installs XP it migrates the
backup files into the setup. I find it better to prepare for the clean
install, but choose to upgrade.

That is a 'Full retail' version. It is intended as one that will do a
'clean' install without needing evidence of a qualifying product for an
upgrade; but will also do an upgrade of your ME just fine. Run it from
the ME system; enter Install; make sure it is on Upgrade, not New
Install. And first Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
