Windows wont shut down

Kevin J. Nielsen

I have Windows XP home with sp2 and all the current upgrades. When I click
start, then shutdown, my computer freezes. I cant even get to the shutdown
menu. The only way to shut down my computer is to turn off the power or hit
reset. I have nav and norton ghost running (if that makes a difference).

Any ideas?

Thank You

Kevin

When did this start? Was it sudden or gradual? After a hardware or
software change? This is the type of information that is helpful for
troubleshooting.

If that doesn't help do some clean boot troubleshooting

It was sudden. Right after I installed some software. I dont remember what
software because I installed a lot of different software around that time
(about 4 months ago) I think it was norton software that may have done it
but I also installed some other software but I cant remember what it was.

You say you installed something, well it should be in Add/Remove Programs so
uninstall it from there and then do a System Restore to remove the Registry
Settings.

I tried a system restore but for some reason my system restore never works.
I always get the message "your system cannot be restored to {name} no
changes have been made.

System restore is notorious for becoming corrupt. The only thing you can do
now is to shut it off reboot and turn it back on, then create a new restore
point. See the link below if you need guidance in turning off system restore.

If you installed the update for Zone Alarm, that may well have caused
your problem. The update has caused many many people nightmares,
including myself--Windows would not shut down. I had to remove ZA in
safe mode and then do a system restore in normal mode.

Yes, system restore is turned on. How can I know if spyware is affecting
it. I have done spyware scans and it never made a difference.

I went to the following link posted by Rock and I had to stop automatic
update service, this fixed my problem of not being able to even get to the
"OK" to shut down my computer. I then disabled terminal services and
gearsec.exe. I also ran the shutNTdown registry patch. Now my computer
shuts down without a problem and it shuts down faster than ever.

Thank to all

My XP just developed a similar problem: Instead of Restarting, it
Shuts Down. Then im powering up again, it requires either several tries
to get past OEM logo screen, or a several minutes' wait, I'm not yet
finished pinning down which. Anybody else ever seen this? Is it
included in that lengthy link as a fixable problem? It shouldn't be
a thermal overload problem...unit is well cooled.

Thanks.......
