Windows will not load

Hello
I have a problem loading windows. It will only go to the Windows XP screen
and then hang - does not go any further. I tried loading windows in the safe
mode and then tried system restore. It works until I have to shut down my
computer. When I shut down my computer and then turn it on again, it hangs at
the Windows XP screen again. I would like to know what causes the problem and
how can I fix it. I don't want to go through the whole system restore each
time I turn my computer off.

Thanks a ton. Much appreciated

See if there are any clues in Event Viewer:

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

I ran eventviewr.msc as suggested. I see 3 icons ie. application error
records, security audit records and system error records

Under application error records, I see some warning icons (msiinstaller) and
information icons. I also see error icons (msiinstaller)

Under the system, I see these logged events - information, error (service
control manager, DCOM) and a warning icon (Dhcp)

Please advise. Thanks a ton

No Event ID's? If you have Event ID's you can look them up:

www.eventid.net

Otherwise, we don't really have enough information to give you focused
troubleshooting.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

What did you install? Since a System Restore brings you back to normal,
something you installed and/or something that is running is causing a
major problem. But right now, only you know what you did and what
changed.

If you can't narrow it down to something you installed or changed, try
clean-boot troubleshooting:

Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -

Also - The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Thanks to you, my problem is solved. It was the Word program that was
causing the problem. I reinstalled it and I think it works fine now.

Thanks again for the prompt reply. Much appreciated.
