IE 11 will not open. I’m on Windows 10 and have been trouble free since upgrading from Windows 7 some months ago.

I had been using IE 11 without any problems and then had about an hour and a half break. I returned to the PC to find that the programme (IE11)would not open at all.

First, I rebooted, no change. Then I tried resetting IE to its default state, no change again. However, the instructions for doing this state “click Close and then OK” but on clicking “Close” the whole thing disappears and there is no option to click “OK”. Is this relevant?

Then I went to System Restore. Something must have happened towards the end of last session I had because I found a System Restore point just before I finished the session. Anyhow, I tried three different System Restore points, including that last one, but all of them failed to restore the system due to error 0X80070005. So, no further forward.

Then I tried Troubleshooting in the Control Panel but again no joy.

I do have Microsoft Edge which works perfectly well and, as far as I know, everything else on my PC is working too.

Where can I go from here? All comments gratefully received.

Does anything show up in event viewer around the time that you try and launch IE11? That may give us a clue at things that are going on in the background :).

Thanks, Ian.

I tried to open it at 19.01 and this appeared in the Event Viewer.

And this seems relevant too.

They mean absolutely nothing to me. :)

Thanks @nivrip - could you try zipping up that .xml log file linked to in your last screenshot and upload it, as that may contain a bit more info (hopefully some linked dlls that would give a clue, as ntdll doesn't give much away).

Could you also run the System File Checker, just in case you've got a corruption problem (as I would have thought a system restore would fix most problems caused by updates, changes, etc...):

  1. Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, then select Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Enter sfc /scannow.

Thanks again, Ian.

That .xml log file will not actually open.

As for the System File Checker I've been through the whole shebang. I got messages saying that there were some errors and that they had been repaired but it seemed to have made no difference.

Open Run and type in " C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\Temp\WERFA22.tmp.WERInternalMetedata.xml " without quotations and hit Enter. You should then be taken to the temp folder. Copy the folder and paste it to your desktop. Compress / zip the folder then you can upload it to the forum and @Ian will be able to read it.

If you manually browse to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\Temp\, does it list anything there?

May be worth doing it on a fresh open of IE so that it's a freshly generated log.

IE11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, so it may be worth making the jump to another browser one day soon anyway (as although it'll be supported for a while, it'll fall behind in terms of development). It's not a solution to the problem, but worth mentioning :).

What you could try is uninstalling IE11 and then re-installing it again (although it may just "disable" IE11, so may not work):
  1. Open “Control Panel“.
  2. Select “Programs“.
  3. Select “Turn Windows features on or off“.
  4. Uncheck “Internet Explorer 11“, then click “OK“.
  5. Select “Yes” on the warning about Turning off Internet Explorer 11

Also, do you happen to have EMET installed?

The Temp folder is empty but I found this in Report Archive folder of the ProgramData file. It relates to one of the failed attempts at System Restore and is rather long winded.................

I did try to download a new version of IE 11 but the PC wouldn't take it as "I already have the latest version."

Can you try stopping protection in Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit please (make sure it's stopped fully), I suspect it's that causing the issue.

Ian, I wish to propose you for a knighthood.:) The problem is solved. :)

I have posted this problem on Bleeping Computer and at least three other forums. Many, many suggestions have been made but none have been helpful in sorting this out.

How did you manage to come up with that? There were some minor problems with Gmail too but that also seems to be rectified. :thumb: Strange because I've had Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit on this PC for many months with no problems.

A thousand thanks for your patience and knowledge.

Glad we could help :D.

It was the log result that got the ball rolling, as there few only a few non-standard app .dll's loaded alongside IE (the standard ones I presumed were OK if SFC gave the all clear after a repair). I checked the Kaspersky and MBAE bug forums to see if there were any reports, and sure enough there were other MBAE users with the same error.
