Windows Vista RTM pricing...

Well... not tracking totally on the DVD screener thing, but it smells like
piracy to me... and believe me, I'm not getting on my high-horse or anything
like that... do what you will. Not for me to judge others. And I'll stand by
my previous statement.

It is, in my opinion, better to consider what the thieves will do.

Copyright holders, even though you may consider it unimportant, have a
duty to protect their copyright.

N'uff said?

To MS: please, please restore purchase to the consumer on a universal
principle of meritocracy.

As a UK resident I am not too happy with an OS influenced by EU "acting
on my best interest" nor by an OEM "acting on my best interest".

I appeal for MS to let the best variant be available worldwide by online
purchase direct from source without all of the twiddling and tweaking by
governmental lowbrows.

You know it makes sense?

Let me decide where to spend my hard earned shekels?

(I don't think I need governmental assistance in this and positively
wish to avoid "in my best interest" initiatives influenced by non-MS
agencies)

I'm sure that MS agrees with you, but if the powers that be (Govt. or
EU) tell them that they have to do something, then they have to do it.
So you get a crap version of Windows with media player and other
components that MS would be willing to give you, free, missing. MS is
not the appropriate party to complain to.

Is there not a third way?

- here is the OS your duly (dully?) elected officialdoms suggest is made
available to you

- here is the unadulterated OS that the provider thinks is best

Pay as one thinks is best?

Hey, we've all got the possibilty to keep the RC's up to Mid 2007. That's
when the prices will be stable and well known. And if anybody needs a retail
version the first release day, he shouldn't wonder when he pays "Early
Adoptor" prices.
I switch from 98SE to XPpro nearly a year ago and if it weren't for DX10 i
surely hadn't tried Vista RC1, which also gives me the Opportunity for
checking out the different needs and which will suit my needs...In germany we
say: Take a cup of Tea and wait...

Don't expect prices to drop much. XP list prices are the same now, in
2006, as they were at release. Until this past year, it was very rare
to find an actual retail price more than 20% below that list, and more
often only 10% below list. Lately --- last six months --- I've seen a
few, very rare sales at 50% off, which I attribute to blowing out excess
XP inventory. But I think that what you are going to find, six or 12
months from now, is retail prices mostly 10% below current list prices.

The best deals are likely to be rebate deals for the first week or two
of introduction. In this past, with the purchase of a new copy of XP
and/or Office AT FULL PRICE, there have been introductory rebate deals
in which you got additional items essentially free after rebate. These
deals have been spectacular, but they involved a lot of up-front money.
I remember my first digital camera came this way, a Fuji Finepix 1300
at Staples. At the time, it was a $400 digital camera. It was "free
after rebate" with the purchase of some version of Office or Windows
back in 2000 or 2001. I expect that we will see a lot of this kind of
thing with the release. But it will only last for a week or two. When
XP was released, the deals were so good that I bought copies of XP at
Best Buy, Staples, OfficeMax AND CompUSA. In each case, the stuff that
came with them -- free after rebate -- was worth more than XP itself.

It would be wonderful were links posted to give advantage to the hard
work put in by community testers.

Point us in the right direction when the time arrives?
