Windows Vista Mail

For two days now I haven't been able to send or receive any emails.

I have contacted BT who are no help whatsoever! It is becoming increasingly
frustrating.

Every time I try and send or receive mail the following message appears
Subject test Account: 'mail.btinternet.com, Server: mail.btinternet.com,
Protocol: SMTP, server response : '250 8BITMIME', PORT 587, Secure (SSL):
Yes, Server Error: 250, Error number ; 0X800CCC7D

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.btinternet.com',
Server : 'mail.btinternet.com. Protocol: POP 3, PORT : 995, Secure (SSL) ;
Yes Socket Error: 10061, Error number ; 0X800CCC0E

Have tried the other things already mentioned in other answers!
Please help!

So you are not running Norton or McAfee antivirus?

Hi Julian

I have just uninstalled Norton as you suggested previously to another
frustrated user!

Windows Vista - Sending Emails from Windows Mail
We are aware of a problem where customers using Windows Vista may find that
they are unable to send emails from Windows Mail. In order to fix this
problem, please click on Tools, Accounts and highlight the email account in
the Internet Accounts window. Click on Properties and then click on the
Advanced tab. Change the outgoing SMTP port from 25 to 587. We apologise for
any inconvenience caused.

Hope this helps - Ed

Presumably that didn't work?

Anyway I've noticed a couple of other things.
I use the same servers but have different settings.
You have it configured to use a secure connection (SSL)
and I believe that is wrong.

Go to Tools > Accounts >your email> Properties > Advanced
and untick both boxes "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"

Further you are using port 995 for incoming mail whereas I use 110.

What I suggest is that you change the SSL settings first and give it
a whirl to see if there is any progress. Repost any error message.

Then try the port change separately.
Changing too many things at once doesn't help identify
problems or solutions.

At least they've finally owned up to the problem - though I'm as fed up with
it as you and everyone else who has written about this over the past three
days!

Try this: Open up your account details and on the 'Advanced' tab enter these
values:
Server Port Numbers
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) 587
DO NOT check the box 'This Server requires a secure connection (SSL)
Incoming Mail (POP3) 110
Again, DO NOT check the box 'This Server requires a secure connection'

This works for my BT email account connecting through BT Broadband. Changing
the SMTP port from 25 to 587 does not work, however, on other email accounts
connecting through BT's DSL service. If anyone knows how I can get BT's SMTP
Server to recognize my (POP3) MSN account, I'd be very much obliged!

Good luck,

Ed

That error means the server doesn't support an SSL connection.
Go into the Advanced tab of the Properties for that mail account
and uncheck SSL for both the incoming and outgoing servers.
Unchecking SSL should automatically change the receiving port
from 995 to 110, but if it doesn't, change it manually.

Exactly the same problem and I have. Also -- all my contacts have
disappeared . I get an error message when trying "system restore". I can
receive emails and access the internet. Help please!

An experiment.

Get a Gmail id and see if you can set that up to work
http://tinyurl.com/2k8t29

Follow there instructions as closely as possible...

Don't worry about the instructions being for OE they are virtually the same
for WM.
Note. Don't forget to activate within Gmail
and save changes.

"Server Response : - Error popgate unknown command"
This usually refers to trying to use a feature that the server does
not support. Make sure the box "Log on using secure password
authentication" is NOT ticked.

Windows Firewall is perfectly compatible with Windows Mail.
No need to struggle with non-compatible third party security apps.
