Windows Vista build 5728

On the Vista Build 5728 homepage there is a note saying - Please note: This
build may not have the same level of support or servicing via Windows Update,
and you may not be able to upgrade to the final version of Windows Vista.

Does this mean to upgrade to the final version of Vista I have to do a clean
installation? Does this also apply for build 5600?

You will need to do a clean install from 5728 to the RTM build, but please
test an upgrade from 5600 to 5728. It is a supported scenario, and MS has
specifically asked for this. Also after you upgrade, please see my post
titled "Bug Reports".

Any pre-release version has this clause. You should be prepared to do
clean install. If you're lucky, MS will provide upgrade to RTM.

Hi

Do you know whether I can mount the image with a software like Alcohol 120%
and run the installation from the HD?

Yes, you can use an image mounting utility and then run the install from the
HD

You most likely will be able to use the upgrade option when Vista releases.
The statement you refer to is a caveat. It just means that MS cannot
guarntee that something won't come up that might cause you to have to do a
custom installation at release time. The reference to support means that an
upgrade might work but Microsoft Product Support Services may not be in a
position to help you unless you are upgrading from XP or doing a custom
installation of Vista.

I upgraded from build 5600 which was a clean install on a separate
partition that was created with Boot It NG and it went smoothly. The
only hitch was having to call Microsoft to activate the new build.
Microsoft wanted to make sure I was not installing Windows Vista
Ultimate 32 bit edition on numerous machines which is fair enough in my
opinion since Microsoft must protect their property.
