Windows Update was Updated

Last night at about 11 pm EST, I manually ran Windows Update (RC1, Build
5600 x64).

Windows Update updated itself with a new version.

The details are:

Windows Update software 6.0.5600.16385

Installation date: 9/25/2006 11:29 PM

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

O.K. So far, so good. This morning, I ran Windows Update an another
computer which is running 32-bit Vista and Build 5728. Windows update did
NOT update itself.

At least two possibilities:

(1) Build 5728 already included the updated version of Windows Update. Hard
as heck to get a version out of that program.

(2) Remember the warning on the Build 5728 download page (does anybody else
read the fine print? lol) saying that Windows Update *might* not be
supported in this interim build. Er .... gee ... that would be
unfortunate, wouldn't it?

Anybody want to suggest other possibilities or offer a, hopefully informed,
guess as to what is going on?

Happy beta testing! ;)

I got a Windows Defender update (definitions) this morning. The GetReady
page warns about updating from previous Vista releases, but it does not say
WU may not work. In fact, the release notes say this about WU:

"Windows Update

If the local area network settings are configured manually to use a specific
proxy server, installation of updates will fail if Windows Update is set to
either of the following modes:

Install updates automatically
Download updates but let me choose whether to install them

To prevent this, do one of the following:

Configure the local area network settings to not use a proxy server.
Change the Windows Update settings to Check for updates but let me choose
whether to download and install them."
