The automatic windows xp update is preventing her from running any
application. When she tries to do anything she gets the following error:

The instruction at 0x00409e6b could not be read, referenced memory 0x000a9000

Any help would be appreciated.

Why do you think this is due to the Windows update?
We would need a lot more information before we can provide help.

Memory errors can occur with any software. As long as your do not
install drivers from Windows Update, look at the other software
installed on the PC.

Her machine was working fine before the following update: Security Update for
Windows XP (KB951376) was installed. We tried running in safe mode to remove
the update but we can't pull up add/remove programs without that error
showing up.

Can you do a System Restore (In Safe Mode) to a date before the update.
Microsoft bought out a company that makes the program ERD COMMANDER and have it available for free,
but I can't find the download link right now. The file is ERD50.ISO and makes a bootable CD that
allows you to start a computer (from the CD) and then get to the hard drive and restore to an
earlier date, do uninstalls and copy files.
A great tool for PCs that get hosed like your colleague.
