Windows Update has killed my system

Brand new install W2K Pro , trying to run windows update
and update.exe has caused my CPU to peg out at 100%, I
have searched the Newsgroups and Microsoft, Technet etc
and found nothing on this, I have tried ending the tasks
and now there is no task to end and my computer will not
boot. I do not have time for someone to tell me to do a
search as I have said I have done this. If anyone knows
how to resolve this issue please give me a hand and at
least be helpful enough to point me to a proper whitepaper
or technote.

Uninstall KB835732 is the present fix.

Sorry If I did not see that in my searches, BUT the
problem is I have NO hotfixes, updates or anything
installed other than the raw W2K at this time.

This solution comes from Microsoft telephone support folks.

Start Windows in Safe Mode with Command Line.
When the Command Shell comes up (perhaps 1/2 an hour),
navigate to the following directory:

c:\winnt\$ntuninstallkb835732$\spuninst\

execute the follwing command:

spuninst.exe

Nothing will appear to happen, but when you minimize the
Command Shell, an uninstall wizard will appear. Follow the
instructions in the uninstall wizard to expunge the "Patch
of Death" (it took over an hour to complete this task).
After rebooting, your system will come up normally.

OH! I'm sorry. I read your question as "After successfully running the
update your system pegged the CPU". One of the patches installed by
Windows update causes some PC's to peg the meter.


Have you tried booting using Last Known Good configuration or Safe Mode?
