update never terminates

Windows update downloads patches, but the "install
progress:" is very slow, taking hours and never finishing.
The problem is independent of the actual patch and seems
to have started happening after updated to SP4 trashed my
system in August.

This is a Win 2000 pro system, patched to SP4 (I hope and
think). update.exe runs with 99% of CPU, killing it
momemtarily helps the progress, but the patch install
doesn't get installed successfully. Seems like update.exe
is waiting for something, or can't execute some operation.

One hint is that after SP4 trashed my system,
"administrator" doesn't seem to have full administrator
privileges. Local advice was to create a new user with
full administrator privileges, instead of trying to find
and add the missing privileges one by one. My anti-virus
software is turned off for the update.

Any help would be appreciated.

....I have seen the same "Windows Update" problems on several Win2K SP4
servers. I posted this message on Monday, but got no useful replies....RDK
===========
Oct 19, 2003 I noticed 7 new critical updates on the Windows Update site for
Window 2000 Server. I tried to install all of them, as per usual practice.
The process downloaded all of the necessary files and began processing the
updates. During this process it hung, update.exe taking almost all of the
CPU cycles.
The "Cancel" button was grayed out. After 8 hours I closed the IE and Update
dialog windows and rebooted. Everything came up normal, I think!!

I went back to Windows Update and it indicated that 5 update were still to
be applied. I then tried applying the Media Player Script update alone.
Again it hung, but after reboot it did not indicate that this update still
needed to be installed.

I returned to Windows Update and installed each of the remaining update
alone. The first three went normally! The forth (KB826232) has now hung.

Part one of this tale also happened on another server which I maintain,
which is on a totally different network. In both cases I access the servers
using Terminal Services.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. RDK
