\windows\SYSTEM\vgoem.fon missing

[no boot]

After reboot from SP2 I get windows could not start
because \windows\SYSTEM\vgoem.fon is missing
or corrupt.I've done a search for this file on another
computer,and it doesn't have it.It will not boot in safe
mode same screen,ask to put in the start-up disc and
select r at the first screen.Windoes came preloaded on a
30 Gig H/D i've upgraded to a 120 Gig H/D,it's not
partitioned with the copy of XP,I do still have the 30 in
the closet,Short of calling H/P and getting the disc for
it,how can I get this computer to boot up,and whats going
on here?Need the 120 for work today.Thanks for all help.

HP Pavilions that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do
not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden
space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery
information.

Read the following article thoroughly, then follow
the steps outlined to perform a "non-destructive"
recovery operation.

Note: A few days ago, I installed SP2 on a HP Pavilion 760c
and did not experience any issues whatsoever. It is likely your
PC had some file corruption to begin with.

I don't think they were corrupted to begin with,just read
H\P fix with the F10 key,have used it before on other
H\P's Can't use it because when I upgraded to the bigger
H-D I did a drive to drive copy Pavillion 512w worked
well since Oct. 2001.Auto update loaded prompted to
restart,restarted with this error.Put the 30 Gig back
in,it works fine not enough room for what I need,but I'll
get by till I can get the start-up disc for it.I do have
another Quistion thou,I have 2 other computers I do have
a XP disc for,I would hate to lose my data on the 120,all
is backed up,just don't want to spend hours reloading if
I don't have to.Can I extract that file from one of those
disc's,or will there be a problem with the EULA causing
me worse headaches?

A. Yes you can, as long as its for the correct version of
Windows XP you are running on your HP computer.

Thanks for the help,ordered the disc from H/P,think i'll
wait for it,the H-D has 97 gigs on it,reloading and
putting the backups to it on a Monday not an option,maybe
Friday.The only thing I did in the session was downloaded
the new Ad-Aware SE updated it,ran it,only found two
cookies-updated my Computer Associates E-Z Trust
antivirus,ran it,no infection found-noticed the updates
were downloading,backed up my files,waited half hour for
updates,then applied them,restarted it and got the error
message,was suprised when it wouldn't boot into safe
mode.Never had a problem with either H/P I own.The others
work fine with the SP2 barebones also,although they have
Norton AV,and spybot instead of Ad-Aware.May be ad-aware
or CA E-Z AV.Thanks for the many time the group has
helped out.
