Windows restore ?

I somehow DL'd the wrong drivers for my video card yesterday and totally
hosed the system. The initial re-boot came back in very low resolution but
was able to get to the restore function and tried every point in January and
part of Dec for a successful restore, but no joy. Windows said Restoration
was not successful, no other explanation. SAfe mode also a no-go. I
noticed that most points were "check points", which I think are restorable
points? After a couple of hours getting the machine straight, I turned off
restore and turned it back on again to erase all previous non working
points. Other than that, I am not sure what is the proper procedure is to
make these restore points workable. WinXpMed sp3, 300 Gb free space on main
HDD. TIA

It's a shame you deleted those restore points, but what's done is done.

Some programs interfere with System Restore, so they need to be
temporarily disabled. For more info, read:

What is the make and model of your video card?

Now that you have erased all previous restore points, there is no way of
going back to any of them. You probably need to re-install your video
driver.
