Windows Registry Problems

First I will tell what I can about my system.

Computer: Dell Inspiron 1150
Bios Version: Dell Computer Corp. A07, 6/5/2005
Physical Memory: 1,024.00 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Processor: 2.60 Ghz

Not sure what all else you would need, if need more information just let me
know and i'll provide what I can.

Ok, I'll start from the beginning. I had major problems with the laptop and
ended up having to restore the laptop, making it exactly how it was when I
first turned it on. Everything was cool. Installed all my software and did
all I needed to do to get back to where I was. After a couple of days of
working good, I started receiving error messages at the login screen which
read: "Windows - Registry Recovery: One of the files containing the system's
Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The
recovery was successful." I would click "OK" and it would let me log in. but
sometimes the desktop would look like the old windows style and not WIN XP. i
could re-boot the machine and not get the message and log in and everything
would be back fine. Until it finally stopped all together. I rebooted one
time and would get nothing, it would get passed the WINDOWS XP startup
screen, but would never get me to the log in screen. I tried in SafeMode with
the same result. Got on a different machine to try to find fixes for the
problem, and finally found a way around the problem. I backed up what i
needed and proceeded to re-format and re-install Windows XP Professional.
Everything seemed fine as before, proceeded as before. everything was good
again. Everything worked fine for about a week, then I received the same
message again. "Windows - Registry Recovery: One of the files containing the
system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy.
The recovery was successful." Found what i thought was a fix in microsofts
knowledge base, something about programs not completely closing when shutting
down. they had a program patch which i loaded and thought it worked. Went to
boot up again and received the same message. I did as before and clicked "ok"
then rebooted the machine, and all of a sudden the machine was stuck in a
continuous boot. It would start to boot and then re-boot, and then re-boot.
after about 5 or 6 times of this happening if finally went further, but then
gave me the message: "Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt.: Windows\system32\config\system" I am pulling my hairs
out now and that's hard to do since i am bald. anyways, i searched around
again and found a fix to get me back on using steps in microsofts article
307545 - How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP
from starting.
I am now back up and running after having to re-setup all my email setting
in Outlook 2003, and having to re-register programs. Everything is going good
now. I am hesitating though. I do not want to shut down the laptop because i
don't want to have to do all this again. The problem might not come back, but
it very well might. I usually shut down the laptop and take it to and from
home and work everyday. I am afraid that the problem will happen again. I
have downloaded and installed all updates using Windows Updates. I recently
had an update to an adobe program which required a reboot of the machine to
complete, upon boot up, i recieved the message once again. "Windows -
Registry Recovery: One of the files containing the system's Registry data had
to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was
successful." Any suggestions is much appreciated. If there are any solutions
to stopping this registry problem please help. Thanks in advance for all the
help.

I'd start by running chkdsk on the hard drive. Start; Run; type
in chkdsk /f and click OK. You'll have to reboot in order
to make it run. That's normal.

If no help, come on back. Lots more can be done.
