Your school may have a way for you to get it cheaply. Go to the computer
support of your school and find out.
Otherwise - go find an OEM copy and clean install the OS on your system.

Hi

Don't go eBay!! There are Student versions of XP available - depending on
where you are situated.

XP Home might be fine, but... it can't be joined to a domain so that
might be a big problem, you won't be able to join the school or
university domain. Ebay for XP I would avoid, be extremely careful of
who you might be buying it from. The only thing worse than having
limited resources to buy something is being ripped off when you spend
your limited funds! An other alternative would be Windows 2000 if you
can find it for cheap.

PS. You don't necessarily need a full version. There is no difference
between an upgrade version and a full version, other than having to show
proof of previous ownership of a qualifying upgradeable product when you
install. For example, Windows 98/98SE would be a qualifying product, if
you have a CD for a qualifying product then you can just get an upgrade
version instead of the full version. Then with the help of your school
you could pick up a student version for less than $100 from approved
vendors like this:

In all likelihood, WinXP Home will suffice, unless you need to join the
laptop to a domain.

The WinXP Home and WinXP Pro versions are _identical_ when it comes
to performance, stability, and device driver and software application
compatibility, but are intended to meet different functionality,
networking, security, and ease-of-use needs, in different environments.
The most significant differences are that WinXP Pro allows up to 10
simultaneous inbound network connections while WinXP Home only allows
only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a Microsoft domain (a crucial
capability at most universities) while WinXP Home cannot, and only WinXP
Pro supports file encryption and IIS. (Oh, and WinXP Pro usually costs
roughly $100 USD more than WinXP Home.)

Getting a legitimate license of any kind from eBay is something of
a crap shoot. One should be very careful buying any software on eBay,
as eBay makes no prior effort to ensure that such sales are legitimate.
The problems stem from two completely different sources, but have the
same results: the buyer gets ripped off. A great many people don't fully
understand the terms of the license they own, and don't understand that
they cannot legitimately resell it, and - worse still - there are a
great many sellers who do know that they're selling bogus licenses.
eBay reacts only when someone files a complaint, and then all that
really happens, especially in the case of the many deliberate
fraudsters, is the seller of the pirated software returns using a
different alias, to continue selling illegitimate licenses.

If you have to ask, almost certainly XP Home would be just as good for you
as Professional, *unless* you need to join a domain at school.

XP Home and Professional are identical except that Professional includes a
few features (mostly related to security and networking) missing from Home?
Most home users don't need and would never use these extra features and will
see no benefits by upgrading.

For details go to

Also note another point, not included in any of the above: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

I would never buy it on eBay. The chances of your getting either nothing or
a pirated copy are much too great.

If you are a student, do you REALLY need Windows at all? try www.ubuntu.com
instead. It's free and comes complete with excellent Office suite that is
also free. You'd have to pay even more for MS Office.....
