Windows NT 4.0 Shorcuts problem

Not quite sure where to post this.

I was getting a messaqge on my Win NT 4.0 workstation
every time I clicked on a shortcut - 'File type not
recognised' but the shortcut still worked.

I made the big mistake of using winfile.exe to try and
amend the association for a LNK file and now no shortcuts
will work. They are not associated with anything right now
so if I click on a shortcut I get the box coming up asking
me which program to open with.

Can you help?
