Windows Movie Maker balks at a Plextor capture card.

Windows XP Media Edition
Plextor M402u capture card

The card is installed properly and works with other vid apps. WMM
recorgnizes the card, but after setup(USB2, composite signal, MPEG2-Video),
it asks where to save vid files. After completing that box, I get an error
box saying:

"video device cannot be used at this time because it has an error when
starting the device".

I have 2 identical XP computers, and WMM does the same thing on both. Help
needed. Thanks.

Windows Movie Maker (especially in XP) is not designed for analog video
capture. It likes digital video via firewire.

Does the Plextor not come with a third party application to capture video?

Hi Cari, and thanks for that info. I was going crazy with this this setup.
The capture card works fine with 3 other apps. I bought a Plextor DVD writer,
and it came with Roxio Creator. Here's the crowning insult. I captured an
..MPG clip using Roxio, and it played fine on Windows Media Player. When I
tried to import the file into WMM, another error message came up giving me
some blah about "too many something aruthers to continue". Think I'll just
give up with WMM.

Hello Paul:

Download (upload) what you want, convert it into a format that WMM likes,
then save it to wmv and convert it to the output you want:
http://www.avsmedia.com/

It works for me, and it's on sale.

(You need to read about each video device and determine what it's looking
for for input and output. It's a pain, but that's video today!)

Cordially yours,

Young
