I keep receiving the following application error which I
believe is related to Windows Messenger.

msmsgs.exe application error

The instruction at "0x68896e7c" referenced memory
at "0x0168044c." The memory could not be "read."

Click OK to terminate the program.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Jonathan.....Yes, I do have Norton A/V 2003 installed.

If I uncheck MSN Instant Messenger, aren't I leaving my
system open for a virus attack???

FYI...Although, I do not use Instant Messenger nor did I
activate I/M, I receive the spam instant messages all the
time.

Greetings GG,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton
added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict
with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the
Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open
Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then

Hi GG,

No -- all this feature does is automatically scan files when you receive them on Messenger --
in most cases when you receive a file via Messenger, you run it immediately anyway, which
Norton's normal scanning features will automatically scan, so you're really not creating a
security issue here.

As for your spam messages, do they have "Messenger Service" in their titlebar? If so, what
you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger (which
are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor can
Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.
