Windows Media Player Crash/error

So I have encountered an error in WMP that is driving me up a wall. I
am the help desk manager for a medium/large organization. All
computers on the network are joined to a domain that uses Win2k3
domain controllers, about half are win2k and the rest are WinXP. All
machines are on the last released service packs with all the latest
updates and patches applied. The problem occurs on most, not all, of
the computers that are running Windows XP. The following are the error
details:

When WMP is opened a Dr Watson error window pops up after about 15
seconds saying that WMP has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This happens regardless of whether anything is playing. If the user
simply ignores the error window and moves it out of the way WMP keeps
working, however if they chose one of the options the error window
offers then WMP closes.

Info from Dr. Watson error window that pops up:

The version numbers and fault addresses changed based on the version
the user is running.

WMP11:
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 11.0.5721.5145 ModName: wmp.dll
ModVer: 11.0.5721.5145 Offset: 00146577

WMP10:
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.3802 ModName: wmp.dll
ModVer: 10.0.0.4036 Offset: 001b4f1a

Info from event viewer:

WMP11:
Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 11.0.5721.5145, faulting
module wmp.dll, version 11.0.5721.5145, fault address 0x00146577.

WMP10:
Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 10.0.0.3802, faulting
module wmp.dll, version 10.0.0.4036, fault address 0x001b4f1a.

Steps taken to try and resolve:

· Upgraded from version 10 to 11, and then rolled back down to version
9.
· regsvr32 wmp.dll
· c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP
· Removed WMP from computer using the option provided in add/remove
programs to remove windows components.
· Replaced wmp.dll with know good version
· Removed all codec's
· Removed all other media players.
· Repair install of Windows
· Scoured Microsoft Knowledge base and Google groups for answers
· 1.5hr support call with Microsoft to no avail (ended call upon being
asked to pay for further support)

At this point I am nearing making the call to switch everyone off of
WMP to real player for media files, something I do not want to do.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Please post the solution (as will I) if
you find it.
