Windows Mail worse than Outlook Express

You guys in Microsoft worked for five years with Vista, and I am quite amazed
that you have not been able to make a better product than Windows Mail as a
replacement for Outlook Express. On 7/3/2007 6:10 PM PST Frank Saunders,

WinMail will only auto complete if it was one of the last 29 addresses you
sent to.

Why do you have to make life difficult for the users? When I check the box
"Automatically complete e-mail addresses when composing, I'd expect more than
just the 29 last addresses.

Furthermore, Windows Mail has got a lot worse search feature than Outlook
express. When searching for emails, it will not find all the emails. For
instants, when I'm searching for parts of an email address, it finds only the
messages for 2008.

I would like to have Outlook Express on my Vista Home Premium system.

"You guys in Microsoft"? None of the regular responders here are
Microsoft employees. We are volunteers who donate our private time
to help others. Microsoft, in turn, recognizes the more reliable responders
with the title of "MVP" (Most Valuable Professional).
Many of us were Vista beta testers, and we duly informed Microsoft
of bugs we found. For reasons that are not clear, Microsoft did not
fix all the bugs we found in Windows Mail before it was released.

It is not possible to install OE on a Vista system.
You may be happier upgrading to Windows Live Mail since it
benefitted from a longer development cycle, which allowed many
WM bugs to be fixed:

Dear Gary

Thank you very much for your reply. I appologize for believing that MVPs
were employed with Microsoft. I downloaded Windows Live Mail, but since I
bought my computer in Norway and that I am a Norwegian, I couldn't see an
option to download an English language version of the program.

However, when it comes to my new mail client, I have left Microsoft
alltogether. These last couple of days, I've been getting used to Mozilla
Thunderbird, and I am impressed with this program. It is very adaptable to my
needs, and it is superior to Outlook Express or Windows Mail. I think I am
going to be very happy with Thunderbird. (I have avoided Internet Explorer
for many years, and browsers like Opera and Firefox are far superior to IE.
My favorite is by far Opera where I'm typing this message.)

Quite a few people like the Thunderbird email client.
I tried it a few times, but gave up when it did not offer to import
my Windows Mail accounts, settings, emails, rules, etc.

Well, you will need the addon available at
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Importing_and_exporting_your_mail. Importing the
email from Outlook Express is completely automatic, and in Windows Mail you
have to import the folders individually. However, the effort was worth it
with increased functionality. One example could be the sent item folder and
its subfolders. In Outlook Express and Windows Mail, these subfolders will
only list your name as the sender and not the people to whom you are sending
the mail. Thunderbird organizes all subfolders in the sent items in the same
way as the sent items.

Moreover, I've had problems locating all the messages because the search
feature does not work very well. This is working without any problems in
Thunderbird. The search feature is excellent.

One last benefit of Thunderbird is the way the program handles attachments.
You can delete or detach attachments as you like making your mailbox much
more manageable than saving all the email wil all the attachment.

If you have time for transferring your mail to Thunderbird, please try it. I
think you will be very happy

The part about the Sent Items folder is not quite right. In OE/WM/WLM,
you can customize which columns are displayed, and you can add a
'From' column.

I've not had a problem with finding messages. Some people inadvertently
turn Vista's search indexing feature off, which will hamper searching.
