Windows Mail restarts after closing

Hello Gary,
I must agree with Tina on how bad windows mail is, I have had nothing but
problems with it being unable to delete messages, leaving ghost messages and
locking my outbox with stuck messages. I bought my laptop with os supplied by
microsoft and they in my opinion are to blame for releasing the system before
they had ironed out all the bugs on it. If antivirus software is not
compatibile with vista then why is it preloaded by computer manufacturers?
I have now used 3 different AV'S and problem still exists with the mail
trying to restart after closure and I have only just managed to eradicate the
ghost e mail problem! And I have been waiting since Jan this year for patches
to the software.
Also if problem is related to data transfer from old systems ,as I did this
as well ,then it should not be recommend!

Yep it's Outlook Express that I transferred :) although I disagree with your
description of it as a freebie mail program as it was a preloaded component
of a system I paid for - it's a bit like saying to someone with car problems
that you're surprised they used the freebie engine components that came ready
installed. I only want it to send, receive and store mail and I buy the
Business editions when I get a new OS so I don't think it's unreasonable to
expect the preloaded components to work at that basic level.

Whilst I can see the logic in Cassandra's suggestion that the AV may have
corrupted the program, I don't think deleting the various mail accounts is
going to fix it - going back to the car example, it would be a bit like
reprogramming the radio to try to fix an ignition problem. The one thing it
does do is leave me unsure whether I should be swearing at Microsoft or
McAfee each time the stupid thing refuses to close down ;)

However, other posts on this forum suggest people have experienced the same
problems without McAfee being present, so from that I feel it's fair to
assume the root cause of the problem lies with Windows and/or a standard
Windows component (OE, possibly combined with the use of Easy Transfer).

If Microsoft sold cars ......

Those two programs are not related except they both do email.
What you had on your old PC probably was Outlook Express,
not Outlook.

No, I wasn't saying that deleting and then re-adding all email

you close it. Cassandra was saying that. Since you had
misunderstood what Cassandra was saying, I was merely merely
explaining what she meant.

It won't hurt to try Cassandra's suggestion, but I don't have high
hopes that it will solve your problem.

oh heck now I'm even more confused LOL I'm sorry, I think I've explained
myself badly. I do use Outlook and I transferred it from my old (XP)
computer to this one using Easy Transfer. Vista calls it Windows Mail on my
start menu, but when I click on it, it's still Outlook that opens. tbh I was
just assuming Windows Mail was a new name for Outlook, because Vista appears
to consider the two to be the same thing.

So you're saying, if I delete and then re-add all my individual email
accounts, that will stop the mail program trying to restart itself when I
close it? I'll give it a shot if I'm understanding you properly but I'm
checking first because it doesn't seem logical?

What Cassandra meant is that you should go to Tools, Accounts,
select the account, the click on Remove (delete). You will not
lose any emails by doing so. Restart Windows Mail, then recreate
that account. The reason for doing this is because an AV like
McAfee can leave a mail account corrupted even after you
uninstall the AV.

Since email is so critical to your job, I'm surprised you chose to
rely on a freebie email program. You would have been better off
with a more industrial strength program like Outlook.

Hi Cassandra thanks for replying :) I don't want to reinstall my whole mail
program as I need all my old mail for reference (it's a work PC and part of
my job is customer services so I really do need to refer back to previous
mail fairly frequently). That's why I used easy transfer - there's
absolutely thousands of mails, I can't afford to lose them and I can't see a
way to do a clean install without that happening.

I did try installing Windows Live Mail, thinking I could import/export the
old stuff from Windows Mail, but my work involves countless mailboxes and
different topic folders and Windows Live Mail didn't appear to offer the
flexibility to create folders, etc. the way OE/Windows Mail does. Maybe I'll
have to give it another shot or try a completely separate mail prog :( It's
been three days since I got this stupid machine and Im just so tired lol All
I want is a working mailbox that I can open, use and close without countless
error messages at every flipping step. It shouldn't be this much hard work.

Did you try redoing the actual mail account, sometimes through the av
problems the account itself is corrupted and needs to be deleted and added
again.

Hi :) I have the same problem, same conditions as others who've
commented -
I used Easy Transfer from XP to Vista (Business).

I had McAffee running at first (pre-installed) but I uninstalled the whole
thing because it caused so many problems and removing it was easier than
knocking myself out trying to fix it all.

The mail shutdown problem occurred both whilst McAffee was installed and
after I removed it. The mail shutdown problem continued for the brief
period
I had no AV running - this was after I'd rebooted the machine - I really
don't think this problem is connected with AVs.

Then I installed a nice simple prog that I hoped wouldn't interfere too
much
with Vista (Avast - Vista edition), and it is much better but the mail
shutdown problem remains.

I'm not going to unistall Avast too as I need some sort of AV and I think
the fact this problem continued even with no AV present shows that's not
the
cause, but I have tried turning Avast off completely and the Mail shutdown
problem continues unaffected.

I'm seriously fed up with this Mail now. I've had endless problems with
it,
the mail stuck in outbox, etc. etc. and have methodically found fixes for
one
thing at a time - they shouldn't sell stuff in this sort of state, if they
want beta checkers they should sell it at a special cheap rate to people
who
are willing to go through this hell and only sell it at the full market
value
when it actually works. There's a consumer law about this sort of thing,
something to do with only selling stuff when it's 'fit for use'. Windows
mail isn't being sold fit for use. Would they sell cars containing
engines
that have vital bits missing and assume everyone who buys them is a car
mechanic? I'm soooo peed off with it!

Computer sellers like Dell and HP get paid (bribed) by the AV vendors
to include a trial AV copy on every computer. The problem with AV
incompatibility is not widely known outside of this forum.

Windows Mail is actually quite trouble-free when used with a compatible
antivirus.

Hi,
I have just purchased a new Dell pre loaded with McAfee (which was not
enabled when I used Easy Transfer to move my mail from XP to Outllood Express
to Windows Mail. I am experiencing the same iss when I try to exit. Its not
the end of the world - I can close the Windows error message but it is
irritating. Is there a proven method to resolve this yet ?

Thanks for any advice !

I had this problem after installing the Vista Basic Update over Windows XP.
As part of the upgrade, I uninstalled Norton AV and installed McAfee. Now, on
closing the Mail programme, it shows an error message and then restarts. I
have tried various options and one thing worked (partly): I went to the Mail
programme> Tools> Message Rules>Mail Rule where I found a checked box "Auto
Generate Norton Anti-Spam Rule". I unchecked and deleted this. On closing
Mail an error message appeared and I had to close the dialogue box but the
Mail programme didn't restart. So in my case it seems to be linked with
residual parts of the Norton programme.

However, McAfee also causes various problems in Windows Mail,
although seldom immediately. Therefore, you might want to uninstall
McAfee also, then run this program to clean up after it:

You might then want to install a replacement antivirus program.
I recommend either avast! or AVG for home use, either one with
a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email,
or NOD32 for business use.

Both Norton and McAfee cause various problems in Windows Mail,
although seldom immediately. So does a recent version of Trend.
I suggest that you uninstall McAfee also, then run the cleanup
programs for both of them:

You may also need to remove your email account under Windows

You can go to Start | Search and type msconfig and then see and disable what
startup items and services there are to help determine the culprit.
