windows mail is a piece of crap

It appears that the "problem" sits about .75 - 1 meter in front of the
monitor. This problem can not give a description as to what is wrong.
Therefore, no one can assist him.

Windows Mail looks like the old OUTLOOK, but with Outlook Express6 you could
load and send all your Hotmail accounts in HTTP without going to the webside
what was very handy and this is not be possible in Windows Mail.
That for me it is using the old XP in stead of Vista, as it is to much
trouble to cheque all the time, but Microsoft let us pay €19 a year for
using this facillity and now it is not working any more in VISTA.

Got to say that windows mail is a huge improvement over outlook express
works fine for me

Sandaner, give it a few days, you will be as digusted as the rest of us.
Mine worked fine for a few days too.

Use something else then, there are lots of freeware options.
Thunderbird being one.

Switching a mail program is something people should not do lightly if they
have a lot of archived mail that they depend on. If you save your email and
have confidence that Microsoft will fix Windows Mail it is reasonable to
stick with it for now.

A signal from Microsoft that they understand that Windows Mail needs fixing
and they will not disappoint us would be helpful in keeping people from
giving up on Windows Mail (or even Vista itself). MVPs related to other
parts of Microsoft technology are often a conduit for such reassurances.

This may not be a popular opinion, but I say Good Riddance
to Hotmail. Hotmail is not very reliable anyway, and it would
be embarrassing to me if a correspondent asked for my email
address and I gave him my Hotmail address. It's sort of
like admitting you buy all your clothes at Kmart...

Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database. Each email is stored

separately.

Do the following:

1) Open Control Panel then select Folder Options.

a) click on the Views tab

b) Select "Show hidden files and folders"

c) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

d) click APPLY then OK.

e) Close Control Panel

2) From Windows Mail

a) Click on the Tools menu

b) click on Options

c) click on the Advanced tab

d) click the Maintenance button

e) click the Store Folders button.

f) make a note of the location of the message stores. It will be

something like:

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

g) close Windows Mail

3) Open Windows Explorer

When it opens, you will see a small black triangle next to the user account

name. Click it to collapse it.

For the following, the triangle will not appear till you put the mouse over

the element in question.

Move the mouse to the "Computer" line. A triangle will appear, click on it

to expand it.

You should see something like "Local Disk (C:)"

Click on the triangle to expand it.

Locate "Users" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate <username> and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "AppData" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Local" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Microsoft" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Now, in the right window pane, locate Windows Mail.

Click on it.

In the left window pane, scroll upward till you see "Local Disk (C:)"

Now, in the right window pane, hold them left mouse button down on the

Windows Mail folder.

Drag it to the "Local Disk (C:)" and release the mouse button.

Select MOVE Here.......

Now, this may take a bit to get done, depending upon how much mail is there.

Give it time.

Now, when it's done, create a new folder name Windows Mail to replace the

moved one in the

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder.

Now start Windows Mail.

It will be empty but that's no biggie.

Create a couple of folders in Windows Mail and name them Old Mail, Old

Sent.

Click on the Old Mail folder to open it.

Resize Windows Mail so you can see both Windows Explorer and Windows Mail.

In the Windows Mail folder you will see a Local Folders folder, click the

triangle to expand it.

Locate the Inbox folder.

In this folder you will see a lot of .eml files. These are the old emails.

Drag and drop ONLY the .eml files to the Old Mail folder in Windows Mail.

Do similar for Sent Items to the Old Sent folder.

Now, see if Windows Mail works for you.

It's not a problem when you can just move the emails in Windows mail to
Thunderbird, or another chosen app.
You could run both side by side until you made a decision to stick with one
or the other as many other apps leave messages on the server as an option.
Also, Windows mail has only been out for 2 1/2 months so it's not like
they've been using it for years.

Shame WM wasn't properly tested in the beta.

If someone has imported Outlook Express mail into Windows Mail there can be
a lot of material. Some of the worst problems of Windows Mail, such as the
broken pasted hyperlinks, may not be obvious until some recipient points it
out, so many people may have transferred lots of mail from XP computers and
not yet realized there is a problem.

Keeping everything on the server is OK for a few weeks, but for longer
periods running a parallel system and deciding what to save is a bigger
bother than the faults of Windows Mail. Transferring to Thunderbird and
then back may work, but such transfers are sometimes problematic.

I'm betting that Microsoft will fix the problem, but some sign from
Microsoft that they plan to do so would be encouraging. For other Microsoft
products, one gets hints of such fixes through MVPs, but I've seen no sign
of that here.

I only mention thunderbird as an example, there are plenty of other free or
commercial products better than WM IMO.
Don't see the difficulty in running 2 email apps side by side to see which
one you prefer.
Also I don't see the problem in CTRL - A & dragging *.eml files from one app
to another, that's how I moved all my emails from OE to WM & vice versa. I
just stored them temporarily in dirs as *.eml files then selected them all &
dragged them back to the folder I wanted in OE/WM.

There's no real difficulty here & it's no big deal.
Didn't touch the import function.

I fail to see the point in using a broken program in the hope that someday,
MS might get round to fixing it.
I'd rather use a well functioning program today.

Transferring email messages from Outlook Express to Windows Mail worked
fine. Going from Windows Mail to Thunderbird and then back would get me
more nervous.

I dumped Internet Explorer 7 because Microsoft made it clear during the beta
that the restrictions in hiding or moving toolbar items were by design. If
Microsoft made it clear that the broken pasted hyperlink problem was by
design I would switch to Thunderbird now. I'm sure that others will be less
willing than me to assume that Microsoft will fix serious bugs, and I can
understand why they might switch now. But I like to be using products with
large user communities and I hope that Microsoft fixes the pasted hyperlink
bug quickly, or at least announces that they plan to do so.

The scary thought is that so few people at Microsoft use Windows Mail that
bugs won't be noticed. In the past there were several different ways to
report bugs to Microsoft, and none of them seem to be active anymore.
Recently I've only seen bug reporting programs during beta tests.

How does one report a bug to Microsoft these days outside of the beta
period? I've filed huge numbers of bug reports with Apple and Sun in recent
years, but I haven't filed any Microsoft bugs outside of beta test periods
in a few years. Is there still a way to do so?

Who says it wasn't tested properly? There's a lot you don't know and
apparently won't know.

One of the reasons you won't hear anything from the MVPs right now is caused
by NDA,

I don't see the reasononing behind being nervous about switching email apps.
Surely the best route would be to install the app of your choice, move your
emails accross, use the new app & ensure it is to your liking, uninstall old
app if relevent.

I fail to see the risk here.

I've moved all my emails between WM/OE & TB & didn't lose a byte.

I don't know how to file bug reports to MS, maybe use the error reporting
option automatically?

But I prefer to vote with my feet.

IMO WM is probably the worst email app I have used for a long time.
OE isn't brilliant, but it's better than WM.

and I don't think it can be uninstalled in Vista?

Isaac you and Steve seem to have what's going on with windows mail down, and
Dguess sounds like a microsoft commerical. I have been working on trying to
get some answers for 4 weeks. Everything seems to work fine except windows
mail and it is going to make me older than I am. It takes over a minute to
get reply or forward up. And the contacts forget it . No one has told me
how to see my folders that I saved from OE and if I find them how to bulk
mail. I have a new machine HP load with vista home premium , 1 gb ram , amd
3800 and it locks up occasionally more than my xp ever did , about as much as
my 98 did, so I think Microsoft has gone backwards and I don't care about
"databases" just want speed and free of fixes. The last fix Dguess gave
Domnick made me throwup although it probably did fix the problem.
