Windows Mail for Newsgroups and Outlook 2007 for email?

Charles Tomaras

I use Windows Mail Vista for my newsreader and Outlook 2007 for my email
client. I can't figure out as I used to with Outlook Express how to make
Outlook 2007 the default email handler for situations where I want to
respond directly to the newsgroup poster or forward a newsmessage to a
collegue. The option for default email in Windows Mail is grayed out and
unavailable. As far as Vista and every other application is concerned
Outlook 2007 is my default email app. Any clues as to how to make Windows
Mail recognize that?

Thanks!

Try Control Panel, Default Programs applet to set the default mail and news
clients.

Thanks Jim. I've already tried that route. Everything is set for Outlook to
be the default mail handler but there is no way to uncheck the .eml
association under Windows Mail. So, when I try to forward or send a reply to
a message from the newsreader it uses Windows Mail. it's not like I do a lot
of that stuff so I suppose I could just set up a mail account in Windows
Mail but it's not what I want to do and it's not the way things used to work
in Outlook Express.

Save an email to your Desktop, right click it and choose Open With. Choose
the program you want and check the box to always use that program.

BINGO...that fixed it! Another win for Frank Saunders....another year of
MVP...another year of MSDN Universal. Life is good! :)

Thanks!

Glad to see Frank's reply fixed the problem. Good luck.

I think that's a good issue for a bug report if one of you hasn't already
done so through your channels. On a related topic, for those of us (and I'm
sure there are many) who use Outlook for email and Windows Mail for a
Newsreader, it would be nice to be able to climate the "mail" section of
Windows mail from view in the interface and have it appear to be only a
newsreader.

Tried the /outnews switch when you start? (Try winmail/outnews on the Start
line) Or looked around on www.slipstick.com for some added tips on using
Outlook with Windows Mail?

When I do that, I get a message every time it starts that winmail is not the
default news reader. I click yes to the question, but it doesn't save. The
next time I start it, I get the same prompt. That's true even if I run as
administrator.

How do I get it to accept being the default newsreader?
