I have the same the problems, having trouble saving, locks up under all the
office functions. Won't load any items and so fourth. Doesn't show when
trying to save any compents just switches over to my doc's, then locks up
from that point. I too have disabled all up dates till futner review. Go back
on track after removing the lastest updates, nut sure which ones are the
problems. Please advise on any info.

I'm having trouble with the latest XP updates too . After the updates
are installed I can open a folder, such as Windows Explorer, but then
when I try to open a subfolder the cursor changes to an hour glass and
nothing more happens. I've carried out a system restore, which solves
the problem, but then the updates try and reinstall themselves again.
I've disabled automatic updates in frustration.

Me too. Same problem on both my PCs, so I've restored and disabled auto
updates. The problem also affects "save as" etc. Can somebody post back here
when microsoft have sorted this problem out. Thanks.

When you say "targeted", do you mean only for those who were affected or
for everyone, even if they weren't affected by the update?

Only affected users

For customers who have already applied the update and are experiencing the
problem related to the older Hewlett Packard Share-to-Web software, or older
NVIDIA drivers prior to or including version 61.94, the revised update will
be available through Windows Update and Microsoft Update. The targeted
re-release will be automatically delivered to affected computers through
Automatic Update if it has been enabled The re-release will not be
distributed to non-affected computers.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0 will also determine if one
of the identified third-party COM controls has been installed and will offer
the revised security update.

For Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 1.2.1, the detection logic
has been updated to offer the revised package only to machines that do not
have the initial security update installed. MBSA 1.2.1 cannot be used to
determine if the identified third-party COM controls have been installed. In
this situation, we recommend either a manual or Group Policy install of the
revised security update.

I believe I have narrowed down the "bad" update as Security Update for
Windows 2000 (KB908531). I too encountered problems in Microsoft Word &
Excel. Once the programs were opened, if I tried to open a file it would
lock up the program. I deleted all updates, updated again and it occurred
again. I then deleted updates one at a time and the problem did not occur
after I deleted (KB908531). I now have all current updates installed with
the exception of this one and my programs are operating just fine.

I am really surprised at the amount of trouble caused by this
particular update XP-KB908531.
As indicated in an earlier post that I too had some initial trouble,
when trying to save documents in Word. The problem vanished after I
restarted Windows in SAFE MODE and deleted all files in Temp and TIF
folders. (All files cannot be deleted in normal mode.) Also, ran
AdAware and Spybot SD while in safe mode -- no malware was detected.
I am not convinced that the deletion of temporary files actually did
the trick. I too have an HP inkjet printer and an HP scanner, but
havn't activated the Share to Web. Other particulars of my system are:
Legit copy of XP-Pro, full installation (not upgrade); Single user.

How will Windows Update know the difference?

It's up to the user. If a user is not experiencing any problems after the update, these users will not have any need to re-apply the update. However, even if a user did not experience any problems, re-applying the updated patch will not have any damaging effects.

The KB908531 patch was identified as having problems within 2 day's of it's release and the MVP's posted a fix on these newsgroups that same day. This rectified the problems for most of the users who posted here.

This is completely incorrect. Microsoft identified the problem within
48 hours and provided a fix almost immediately. MVP provided the vbs to
automate the fix as per M$ article (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165
). The fix rectified for some but not all. There is another fix coming out next week 04/25/06 which will put
to rest the incometence of M$ testing center.

So what is the point of "targeted re-release of Security Update MS06-015
on April 25" when it should be applied irrespective of problems or not
if as you say "re-applying the updated patch will not have any damaging
effects"? Is this yet another cockup waiting to happen?

dmk92270...thank you! I have been so frustrated with the last updates that I
have been ready to scrap Microsoft.

I have disabled automatic updates and deleted KB908531. Everything is back
to operating condition. I'll be waiting until after 4/25 to check for any
updates.

I have gone to HP and Nvidia sites for updates and I am told I'm current. I
have also done the HP Share-to-Web fix. So we'll see where Microsoft goes
next!
