Windows installer won't quit!

This weekend I ran the Windows 2000 repair function from the installation
CD. I have sp3 and after the repair I still seem to have sp3 although the
repair was run from the original version. The repair fixed a problem but
left me with an annoyance. Everytime I boot up Win2000 I get a window
entitled Windows Installer "preparing to install". It keeps coming back
when I cancel it. When I start up Internet Explorer the Windows Installer
tries again. And again. Sometimes it'll come back when I click on a link
to a web site.

I can't find it in the Startup group, or even using Advanced Startup
Manager. Is this function hidden in the Registry? Does anyone know how I
can disable it permanently.

Thanks, John

Reinstall SP3 or SP4...

I just did the same on one of my boxes. Check your event viewer. If it looks anything like
mine, you have a slew of Alerts and Errors in system and quite a few in Applications. I
installed SP4 first and then the rest Security patches and haven't had a squawk out of any
Event Viewer as yet. Oh, but it makes a difference whether it was and ERD repair or the last
repair that asks for your Key Code.

There are a few apps. will squawk before you redo the SP, like Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0.

I had some installer problems and paid Microsoft about $90 to resolve the
problem. The bottom line was reinstall the Windows Installer program.
Search microsoft.com for it, down loade it, click on it and follow your
nose.

Hi

See "Every time I launch my application, Windows Installer performs an
installation. How can I determine the cause of the on-demand installation?" in
the FAQ at

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/centers/management/msi_faq.mspx

To access the Application Log in the Event viewer,
run the following command from Start/Run:

eventvwr.msc
