Windows Installer is causing "unusual" termination

Windows XP MCE. I am trying to install Powerpoint XP. The setup programme
runs initially then locks with the error message along the lines of "Visual
C++ Runtime Library - Program C:\...\msiexec.exe. The application has
required the runtime to terminate in an unusual way". Not very informative!

I have de- and re-registered installer, and reinstalled (ref KB article
886630). No change. Tried as suggested in safe mode, but when restarting
from safe mode the installer is not being reinstalled - I have to rename the
installer files back to their original names to recover the installer
function.

Any help would be gratefully received - even if it is just pointing out my
stupidity.

XP MCE fully updated prior to install attempt. Office 2000 installed okay
and this is the first 2003 product I have attempted to install.

This can often solve MS Office install problems

Tried the clean up utility, but I am not sure what it is supposed to do.
There was no entry for PowerPoint so I did not select anything to clean.
Obviously, when I tried the install again it failed in the same way

Thanks for the suggestion though!
