Windows folders & .avi files

have come across the most bizarre problem i have ever encountered. On my
computer and other drives i store alot of avi files. Recently i have the
problem that if i open a folder with more than a few avi files in it, it will
stop responding after a very short while(have no problems with ne folders
containing other file types). Likewise if i go to my media player and go to
open file the program will crash. I tried a few things including
re-installing the system from scratch but the problem persists. Any input
would be greatly helpful.

System: fully updated Win XP Pro SP2
tried:
1.thought it might be something with it displaying icon pictures so turned
that off no help.
2. Not a problem with the files themselves cause they all still open and run
perfectly.
3. tried updating all media players/codecs (unlikely to help but worth a
try) no help
4. Re-installed system no help

The above r the main things i have tried so any other suggestions please.
