Windows File Protection Error . . can anyone stop it????

G

GF

er since using Win2K Professional, I occasionally get the
error "Files That Are Required have been
replaced....please insert your Win2K CD...".

I found a page in the MS Knowledge DB that addresses this
exact issue, but the instructions say:

6. When the list of available snap-ins are displayed,
click Certificates, and then click Add.

7. Click Computer Account.

I can't click Computer Account, because there is no such
thing. Is this supposed to be on the list where
certifiactes was, or a button, or a tab..? I've searched
my screen high and low and and found nothing even close to
that. All I have is Add and OK buttons. If I click ok it
brings me back to the MMC window, and Computer Account is
nowhere to be found there either.

Any ideas as to what I can try? Either I'm really stupid
or these instructions are stupid. They made perfect sense
up to that point.
I hate when this happens, people are always writing up
instructions like this, like it's big joke on those of us
who don't fuss with these things on a regular basis, so
I'm left high and dry. It's like saying "open the hood of
your car, find the spark plugs, and now hold the second
green button down for 10 seconds".
Sorry to vent, I just have a whole host of PC issues like
this at the moment, but I'm really tired of this one, it's
been going on for months and obviously is not going to
stop on it's own.

Hi GF,

By writing "MS Knowledge DB" I assume you are talking about:

KB296241 - Windows File Protection May Not Start.
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=296241

If so, I agree that the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article is incomplete since it fails
to mention that only an administrator of the computer has the option of managing
certificates for the Computer account. So... Perhaps Step 1 should say:

1. Locate a Windows 2000-based computer and log on as an administrator of the
computer, or a domain administrator.

For more information, search Certificates Help (certmgr.chm) for the topic titled
"Starting the Certificates snap-in" and "To manage certificates for a computer".
