Why is Windows Explorer not classified?
Is my explorer.exe infected or this is a bug with Microsoft Windows Defender.

Look at Windows Defender Help Section: How to use Windows Defender->Using
Software Explorer. Then under Understanding Software Explorer
details->Classification, you should see the answer to your question.

funny, I just installed IE7 and Windows Defender popped up saying it was
spyware.
MS you really need to update WD so it knows that one of your own programs
are not spyware.

I think Microsoft should take steps to recognize its own software. explorer.exe
and iexplore.exe (IE7)
or my PC might be infected. I installed Windows XP SP2 before a day with all
updates installed.

We should uninstall their software and write a program that will generate MD5
signatures of system files.

The reference to the Help is talking about IE having addons that are not
classified yet. For example, the addons could be from toolbars. Not
classified yet does not necessarily mean spyware.

Can u please suggest what might be the problem and why WD is showing
explorer.exe as Not classified. I have a new installation of XP, so it is
less likely that it has been affected by spyware because the computer hardly
has anything except IE7 and Windows Media Player 11 installed.

Click Tools on IE7 and then click Manage Add-ons and then click Enable
Disable Add-ons. You should see a list of all add-ons currently loaded by
IE. For example, if you have Adobe Reader or Spybot S&D or any of the
toolbars installed, you should see entries for them. Again, just because it
says not classified yet, this doesn't mean spyware.

There were 3 addons running, the flash control, the msxml3 dom and windows
messenger. I disabled them all, restarted the pc and then ran a check again
using WD. WD still showed Not yet classified in both Windows Explorer and
Internet Explorer. I dont have any other software installed.

In the case of Explorer, it might not be so obvious. You would have to look
at the registry keys for extensions to Explorer. It could even be your
anti-virus program. So to see if WD is in error, you would have to do a
clean install of Windows XP , install Windows Defender and then check to see
if WD says not classified. I personally think the whole thing is ridiculous.
I and others have complained numerous times about the not classified issue.
I don't see how SpyNet will totally resolve the issue. Oh well, deaf ears.

I doubt if disabling the add-ons is sufficient. It would be nice if
Microsoft would provide adequate documentation.

This is a clean installation of XP SP2 (done yesterday) with all updates
installed through Windows Update.
Also there is no other software installed except Windows Media Player 11 and
IE7.

So I take the issue seriously.

Thank u for all this support. If you know the email of Microsoft WD team, you
should report them about this. They have written that they support 2
incidents for free. They should include a direct email to their developer or
testing and support team in WD or atleast a feedback form which would get
disabled after submitting bug reports twice (2 free support incidents).

This issue needs to be fixed, else nobody would trust their WD.
