I've had a LOT of problems with this. I'm on my third
clean install of Windows XP. This time, I carefully
recorded the things I installed to see where it broke.
Today it broke again, after installing the following from
the Windows Update website. I did not install them one at
a time, so I don't know which caused the failure. I
uninstalled what I could (which was only two -- the
HighMAT support and the Journal Viewer). But I can't seem
to uninstall the others and the system restore feature of
Windows XP failed to restore back across anything I did
today. So my system is permanently broken until I start
from scratch all over again!
Update for Windows XP Shop for Music Online Link
(KB833998)
Update for Windows XP HighMAT Support in CD Writing
Wizard (KB831240)
Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer (Windows XP)
Windows Messenger 4.7
Windows MovieMaker 2
Windows Media Player 9 Series (Windows XP)
DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime
If my computer continues in it's normal pattern, the
system will degrade until it is completely unusable. This
will take about 3 weeks, but always starts with not being
able to right-click on a large file on a network drive.
The larger the file, the longer it takes for the context
menu to appear. It may take 5 seconds or it may never
appear (and the program is officially hung and needs to
be aborted).
I too would like to know if there is a solution. It could
be as simple as a configuration option, probably hidden
somewhere in the deep undocumented darkness of the system
registry.
