Windows downloads causing computer to freez

Tried to download from the windows download site computer froze.
Was just prompted to upgrade to DEFENDER. Got as far as install and again
was frozen out. Dont have a problem downloading from any other site on the
internet.

Windows XP SP2 home edition
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2.21GHz
1.00GB RAM
