Windows Defender

I've tried for weeks to download Windows Defender but keep getting an error
message: "Unable to completely download."

I've tried so many times I'm frustrated with Beta2. It doesn't show on my
"Add/Remove" programs list but it is on my computer. I've tried everything I
know to remove it completely. My icon tray shows it's there and am 20+ days
since last update. When I try to update it tells me there are no new
definitions or engines to download.

Even have tried other websites to download but keep getting the same error
message "Unable to completely download".

Anybody out there know how to either get Beta2 to download completely or get
rid of it completely. Beta1 sure wasn't like this.

HELP, if anyone can.

That message does not sound like a standard Windows message. Are you
running any download manager software?

I'd recommend getting rid (temporarily) of any download managers, and
downloading to the desktop--don't just run the download. Then, before
attempting the install, disable real-time protection on your antivirus
application, for the duration of the install--turn it back on after.

Have you gone to Windows Update and done a custom scan to see if definition
updates are offered?

Thank you for the reply. I removed all download managers and ran Windows
Update---no Defender updates offered. Tried downloading Defender to my
Desktop but got the same error message---this is a Defender error message.

This is pretty confusing--you ran the downloaded file, and got back the
message "unable to completely download"?

This doesn't make sense to me, and this sure isn't a message I've ever seen
from the program.

You could use the Windows Installer Cleanup tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

(there's a download link in the kb article)

To remove both "Windows defender signatures" and Windows Defender.

You could then delete the \program files\windows defender folder and all
subfolders.

That should remove the program effectively, if that's what you want to do.

However, I don't see how that is going to solve your downloading issue,
which I don't understand at all.

Bill: I'd like to say thanks first of all, have tried every bit of you
advice---still getting that crazy error message about not completely
downloading, it's on my computer but, I am still 27 days outdated as far as
updates go---gone to Windows Update and I am current. Any suggestions on how
to get updates---keep getting message that there are no definitions or
engines to update.
