WD v. 1.1.1347.0
Engine v. 1.1.1508.0
Signature v. 1.14.1530.8 created on 17/07/2006 at 19:53

Thanks Engel. This just downloaded and apparently installed OK on my machine.

Could someone please explain the significance of an 'engine' update, as
opposed to a 'version' update? I see this was quite a big file - is it likely
that a resolution of the Checkpoint Madness Issue is contained in it? Or
would that only come as a new 'version' of Defender?

Program functionality relates to specific modules--We've heard in the past
that some resolution of scanning errors, for example, likes in changes to
the engine code. In other cases, resolution of a given issue lies in the UI
code, which is far less frequently changed--and requires an explicit
download. I'm not certain, based on Joe Faulhaber's message about the
checkpoint issue--which module code is involved. I'd be interested to hear
whether those seeing this issue do see a change with this engine update. If
you don't, I suspect it'll await a UI update, which you'll know about
because of the required download.

Thanks Bill. Sounds as though we don't know for sure, but probably not!

I can't remember - am I the only person who sees the clash between Defender
and the AOL ATWPKT2 driver when Defender runs in real time? It would be nice
to have a version of Defender that didn't persistently see it as a threat
(and at a swoop, would reduce the number of checkpoints to about a third).

I suspect you aren't the only one--there must be some common drivers
involved in this checkpoint issue, or it wouldn't be so prevalent. And I
know very few folks who have AOL code installed--I think none who use AOL as
an ISP at this point.

Let's get some details straight:

You had an apparently successful install?

Was this over an older version? If so, was that Microsoft Antispyware?

Do you have an entry in control panel, add or remove programs, for Windows
Defender? (this helps confirm a successful install) Do you NOT have an
entry in that same place for the older version (if there was one?)

This error is a new one for me, I believe--but the right place to start
looking into it is this article:
