Windows Defender isn't registering with Security Center

I have a Toshiba satellite A-205 which came with Vista and recently have been
having problems with the security center. It indicates that windows defender
is off; however, when I go to Defender it indicates that everything is fine.
I also had trouble with it not registering Grisoft's free version of AVG as
av protection. Any ideas on a fix would be appreciated. Simple language
please, not fully fluent in computer-ese

If your not running the Windows OneCare security suite, maybe the easiest
thing to try as a solution would be to take a look here for information
about a potential WMI repository inconsistency:

On Vista this is a relatively easy fix if in fact your WMI database is
broken, so at least give the verifyrepository command a shot.
