Can not turn on windows defender in Windows Security Center

Guest

When I try to turn on Windows defender in the Security Center a small window
opens... Checking for new definitions....There are no new definitions
available to download for Windows defender. Close the window and Defender is
still off.
Any suggestions?

If you think that the Security Center is possibly not reporting to you
accurately, and you're on Vista then...

Run a cmd prompt as administrator.
Enter the following command: winmgmt /verifyrepository
which checks the integrity of the WMI database and let us know the results.

If your on XP the above command won't work though, so we'd need to know
what OS you're running.

Too, besides running Dave's command if it's appropriate for your OS, are you
running Windows Live OneCare?

And yet another possibility, is your system date set correctly? Check it
by clicking the time clock on the taskbar notification area.

System date is correct. Running Vista. Ran winmgmt /verifyrepository...

WMI repository verification failed
Error code: 0x80041003
Facility: WMI
Description: Access denied

Did you run Command Prompt, by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing "Run
as Administrator"? Again, did you install Windows Live OneCare?

With your info I ran as administrator... WMI repository is INCONSISTENT

I did not install Windows Live OneCare.

Hi Matt;

Good news, you just have to rebuild your WMI database.
Run this command again as an administrator: winmgmt /salvagerepository
The first time you run this it will fail. It will issue stop commands to
the services causing it to fail. It might take a couple minutes for the
services to shut down. Run the command again. Sometimes it takes up to 5
times
before it finally completes on its own.
Reboot your system, and you should be OK.
Let us know how you make out.

Viperstyle,

Sounds exactly like the previous post in this thread, you may have
forgotten Vista's UAC. Here are dean-dean's comments:

"Did you run Command Prompt, by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing
"Run

If that's not what made the verification of the WMI database fail, let us
know, but here's the KB that was published regarding it:

I have the same problem. Suddenly this morning the red shield showed up on the notification area. I cannot turn on Defender in the Windows Security Center. Also the Security Center doesn't recognize my AVG virus scan software. Last night when I went to bed everything was working just fine.

I'm on Vista and I've tried the various suggestions in the posts. I've run a
cmd prompt and the repository was verified. Defender seems to be working but
it doesn't show as working in the Security Center. My system clock is fine.
My Defender version is up to date. I have UAC turned off but that shouldn't
affect Defender.

So what is up with this? And why doesn't the Security Center recognize AVG
virus scan all of a sudden?

Hi Barb;

It really sounds like you have some corruption in your WMI, since both of
those security programs are not being recognized by Security Center
although the repository verifies:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=931099

But, take a look here at Engle's post near the bottom of this thread on
12/14 where he talks of the "belt-and-suspenders mode" for similar
circumstances and see if that helps your situation:

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Shortly after I wrote my note Vista became so
corrupted that very little worked. Device Manager came up a blank, none of
the USB ports worked so I couldn't back up data. Windows Restore didn't work
at all. I don't know how this happened as I haven't had an OS go this bad
since the good old days of Win 95, especially since I have had Vista and the
computer only since mid- Aug.

I had to send the computer back to the folks who built it for me so they
could troubleshoot and reload the OS. At least I was able to add a couple
more 1 gig sticks of RAM to my computer at a great price while it was being
checked out. The tech said the only thing he could find was a great deal of
malware and other junk. This makes me think that Defender wasn't working at
all even though it said it was. Still don't know why Defender went out or the
problem with Vista not "seeing" my virus scan software.

Before things had reached this point Vista was having problems with an HP
software program for my all-in-one printer that had worked perfectly fine for
a month or two. Go figure. I just hope it doesn't happen again.

EvS; Easy solution in that case:

1. Click Start, type CMD in search.
2. From the results, right-click Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.
Type the following command: (If you have logged in as Administrator, you
can directly execute CMD)

winmgmt /salvagerepository

This will perform a consistency check on the WMI repository and resolve the
issue. Restart the system, once done and try enabling Windows Defender
program.

You may experience an error that says the winmgmt /salvagerepository is
failed. Ignore this message, and run "winmgmt /salvagerepository" for 1-2
times. This error is due to Windows services.

Start, all programs, accessories.

Right-click "command prompt" and choose "run as administrator"

Then use the command below.

You must do this regardless of whether or not your account is an
administrator on the machine.
