windows components wizard failure

XP pro single user with all the updates

When I try to run the windows components wizard it runs something, then
says, "You have successfully completed the Windows Components Wizard"
then prompts, "To close, click finish" and when I do, that's it...
nothing else happens.

I never get the chance to actually add or remove windows components...
it just sort of runs then quits.

Hope someone knows how to fix this.

Yes, I am logged on as administrator. There are only two profiles.

I've read those instructions a lot but when it gets to "the Windows
Components screen appears", it doesn't appear. I'm about ready to
re-install even though that's a pain.
