whenver i insert CD's (installation cd's or audio cd's)

into either one of my Sony drives

CRX320E DVD/CD-RW combi
DW-D22A DVD-/+RW

i get a message asking to insert the windows CD because a file had been
changed and the changed file may cause problems

thats not the exact message but it is similar to it

so is this a problem with my drives?

or is there a problem with windows its self?

can anyone put any light onto this?

Thanks (in advance)

Chris

The message is pretty self explanitory... Something changed a file and
Windows wants to put the old one back. Not a hardware issue at all.

Try running "sfc /scannow" in a DOS shell (aka Command Prompt).

If you get the exact message, especially if it includes the name of the
file, you can use google to search out the problem.

it doesn't include any name of any file, nothing like that, it just referrs
to a file

why is a file being replaced everytime i insert a CD? why is it always
asking for the windows CD? this shouldn't be happening, upon inserting the
cd nothing really happens apart from the fact windows XP setup window opens
and the message on screen disappears.

it has never happened before so why now? are my cd-rom drives in some way
disfunctional? and replacing perhaps a driver file or something?

Look for a file on your,"Root" drive e.g outside any folders
called,"Autorun.exe or Autorun.inf" and if found,delete.

If the message can be taken a face value, it might be that you have some
adware/malware or a virus that's repeatedly trying to tweak your system
to its ends, but running afoul of windows.

My remarks are highly speculative, however, so I would strongly advise
that you find a discussion of the exact symptoms you are seeing, and try
related resolutions. Even without knowing the specific file concerned,
you may well find a discussion of the loop you've been going through.

If you are interested, however, in what file(s) are being replaced, you
could probably find out with FileMon, from SysInternals.
