Windows Backup Error (0x8007041D)

Hello everyone!

I keep getting a dialoge box (daily) telling me:

An error occurred when checking the status of the last automatic
backup:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion. (0x8007041D)

Verify the status of your backup.

"OK, how do I verify the status of my last backup? When I close this
dialogue box I am immediatley met by another telling me:"

The backup application could not start due to an internal error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion. (0x8007041D)

Please check your system configuration and try again.

"How do I check my system configuration? And try what again?"

I am lost as to what this means. I have googled the erorr code and it
seems a lot to do with updates etc. I would appreciate some info
regarding this issue. It is linked (according to the title bar on the
dialogue box) with Windows Backip. I have automatic backup scheduled
weekly and have a partition on my hard drive that I use to save the
backup on. Is this a good idea?

I am running windows vista home premium(32 bit) on a dell desktop with
a large hard drive, 2GB RAM and E6400 processor.

Any ideas?

A couple of possibilities come to mind. One, you have something running,
perhaps some system cleanup application that might be corrupting or
otherwise deleting a file that is necessary for the applicaation. NOTE: it
might be some Dell Utility. If you have something on your system similar to
Dell Tools or Dell Utility, check those to see if there is such an app and
turn it off.

Another possibility might be a security issue. You might try turning off,
UAC, Control under Users in Control Panel. Then, let things go until the
next backup, see if it runs without issue. If yes, it sounds as though you
need to take ownership of the folder in which the backup is being saved.

Thanks for your response. I have been using tune-up utillities
recently. Could this be responsible? There is also a utility within
Mcafee Security Centre that has a cleaning function. They sound
wonderful don't they. How fantastic - to be able to "clean" your PC! I
am becoming aware of the downside of such tools. Does anyone trust
their actions?

I am not sure how to tell and I also wonder if the issue can be
resolved if this is the case. I am a bit of a learner still when it
comes to computers. I am drawn to these "clean-up" programs however!

The next question regards "taking ownership" of the backup folder.
Again - How?

Thanks once again for the reply to this post and hopefully I can do
the same one day!

Cleanup utitilities, unless you absolutely know what you are doing usually
create more trouble than they solve and they rarely solve. At the very
least, have a good backup and image your system before running one of them.
They were a miss in Windows 9x, a mess in XP and they are still a mess in
Vista.

Yes, they very definitely could be the issue. It would be next to
impossible to figure out what these utilities have done that miht be causing
the problem, what they've removed, etc.

If you only started using these utilities recently, you can try using the
System Restore feature to take you back to a time before you started using
them. If that doesn't resolve it. I'd backup my data even if you can only
copy files to a CD or DVD or some media off of your primary hard drive and
then start over. There's no telling the mess these apps have made of your
setup. You can also try using Vista's repair feature that you see at the
Vista install screen but I don't hold out much hope that it will resolve or
even see the issue because sometimes what these utilities change are so deep
in the system that setup repair feature will often miss the problem.
