Windows 2000 Installer not running!

We currently have problems with a number of our Windows 2k workstations. The
issue is that windows installer service is not installed\running. We have
upgraded to SP4 the tried to install v2 on some machines, v2 then v3 on
others, and v3 on some other ones. The result is the same with all machines,
windows installed still does’nt work.

We have tried to unregister and reregister using ‘msiexec /regserver’, but
this gives an error about invalid command.

We have also booted into safe mode, and renamed – Msi.dll, Msiexec.exe and
Msihnd.dll, but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

We need to be clear about something. The Windows Installer Service should be set to Manual. And unless
you are currently installing something you will NEVER see it started. So did you have trouble installing an
application which uses Windows Installer technology? This is one service in Windows 2000 that you should
never have to fiddle with. That was true in Windows 98\NT4 but not in Windows 2000. Getting the
Windows 2000 systems updated to SP4 does all the updqating for the Windows Installer service that needs
to be done.

Yes, we know that, but you would still see it displayed in the list of
services, would you not? it isn't there at all.

We have tried to install software, but are getting errors about the
installer not being installed.

Yes it should still be in the list of services. If it is not there then it is not in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer
