Window Explorer Toolbar problem

I lost the use of the BACK and FORWARD buttons to navigate through my files
and folders in Explorer. They are now light grey and inactive, whereas
before, I could actively use them to navigate through files and folders.
What happened?

I have tried to start a new Thread, but was unable to do so. I have a major
problem with my explorer window. Whenever I open Explorer, right click
start, explorer - My major window does not show any icons, files names, etc.
I am running Windows 2000 Server SP4. Need help or a way to open a thread
