Changing view settings

I have tried many combinations of the "view folders" options on windows Xp.
As I navigate through folders, the "forwards-backwards" buttons do not turn
to green, unless I use the "up" arrow next to them.This is a problem when I
add files to programs with a lot of folders eg. paint/ 3d with scores of
subfolders.
Thank you for the advice on keyboard language options, my keyboard is
working properly now.

Sorry, this is only when I am working offline in Windows Explorer.When I am
online in Internet Explorer, no problem. Usually, everything is fine. This
all started when my system slowed to a crawl. I purchased a new hard drive
and re installed windows and a few programs, it all works really fast now, I
am by no means anything but a novice at loading but this is one of the very
few problems I encountered.
