Winamp Hangs in XP

I'm having a strange issue – I start up winamp and starting playing
some music
While I work and I notice that the music sounds choppy as I start
switching windows. Eventually it stops playing, and will not respond
to changing the song, play, stop etc.
If I close it and try to reopen – one of two things occurs:
1.) Nothing happens - but winamp can be seen in tskmgr.
2.) Winamp open but is still hung.

If I kill the process for winamp, in tskmgr, and then reopen it, I'm
back to square one. I even tried Windows media Player, (shudder!),
with much the same results. I even tried the uninstall\reinstall and
still have the same issue.
Any help?
