Win XP Pro SP2 Installation Error

The other day, I had to repair Win XP Pro on a machine. The went fine until
Win Update tried to add Service Pack 2. It would stop installing SP2 with
the following 2 error messages:

Access is denied.

Service pack 2 installation did not complete. Select "OK" to undo the
changes that have been made.

I tried it several times with the same result. I check the Microsost
Knowledge Base and found Article ID 873148. I followed all the steps through
Step 2. I did not get the same error message. I got:

#-086 Deleting registry value
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration\200\Messenger
Migration"

Before I start updating the registry, I want to make sure that updating this
key will not be a mistake.

Is this key a probable culprit for the error message? Can I follow the
instructions in Step 3 with confidence? Can you tell me the label of the
registry hive for HKLM?

Thank you,
Richard Richter

Richard,

Yes. You can follow "Step 3: Reset the registry permissions" with
confidence. It enforces the default security setting required
(Administrators have Full Control usually). If the Access denied error
occurs for other keys, you need to fix the Permissions using SubInACL, which
simplies the process.
