Any solution to SP2 Upgrade "Access Denied" issue?

Hi,

For a couple of days I have been trying to run XP SP2 update, but about
halfway through the process I get the "Access Denied" error. I found this
article (link below) and have followed all the instructions a few times but
when I go into the registry I can't find the file which is causing the
problems. The log shows this...

#E008 Setting registry value
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ssdpsrv\\DependOnService
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

I bought "Registry Mechanic", which cleaned up a bunch of stuff, but I'm
still ubable to run SP2.

Any other suggestions? I am willing to completely wipe this computer clean
at this point. (i.e. full system restore to the beginning of time)

Thanks

If you're going to wipe the system, try slipstreaming your XP CD first, and
then doing a repair install with the updated CD. This will make the
necessary changes and not wipe out your data and installed apps. Do back
up first.

when I go into the registry I can't find the file which is causing the
problems

Note that HKLM implies HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branch. So the mentioned registry branch is actually:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\ssdpsrv]
Value name "DependOnService"

the sp2 file be
installed via safemode
as well. safemode may
give you the critical access
you need.

you can download the
sp2 file from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

also, not sure if investing in
a third party utility for
the registry would be
better than getting a free
utility from microsoft
in the hopes to mend a
key that is interrupting
a microsoft issue:
