Win XP Pro can't find Internet, Win 2k can

R

Robert Oschler

I have a system that dual boots Win XP Pro (just installed), and Win 2k.

I knew something was wrong when the upon first initialization, Win XP Pro
asked me to activate my copy with the telephone activation system. After
reading over 56 digits and then typing 56 digits, my copy was activated.

However, no Internet Connection. I am running on a always-on cable modem
(broadband). I went through the connection wizard (twice), specifying a
cable connection (connect directly via LAN).

Still no Internet access. I can immediately restart and boot into Win 2k,
and the Internet connection is there, but Win XP Pro just won't see it.

Is there an easy fix for this?

Thanks.

Have you checked to be sure that drivers for your network card are loaded?
Have you tried updated drivers for the network card?

Richard,

Yes I finally went "old school" on the problem a few hours ago. Here's the
details:

I have a Linksys LNE100TX (v5) card in the system. Windows XP Pro (sp2)
will not accept any of the drivers I found for the card. (I've been
downloading them from the Internet using a different computer and copying
them over to my XP Pro machine into a directory named "linksys").

Even when I log in as the System Administrator in safe mode, so I can
uninstall the network adapter from the Device Manager, XP Pro doesn't
recognize any of the Linksys drivers I throw at it. When I do a manual
update from the Update Driver wizard where I select the location myself
where the INF file is, it always responds with this message:

"The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary
software"

I tried "selecting it from a list of known devices" -> "Show All Devices",
and Linksys isn't in that list at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Adam,

No. All Google links to those drivers are their site result in 404 errors.
And searching their site directly comes up with nothing. Discontinued?

So I'm getting them from a 3rd party site I found by searching Google
Groups.

Thanks.

That would be your problem - until you find drivers that the card will
accept you won't be able to network with it. I would contact Linksys
customer support for drivers for your specific card model and version.

Richard,

Hmm, I wonder if I'm better off just spending 40 bucks and getting a new
one. The fact that XP Pro doesn't have it in it's database is a bit
disturbing.

Opinion Richard (and others)? If I get a new card to work with XP Pro, what
are the chances it *won't* work with Win 2k which I am dual booting
alongside XP Pro?

Any NIC cards known to be "overwhelmingly compatible" with MS O/S variants?

Thanks.

At this point replacing the NIC may well be a better idea - you've already
invested a great deal of time with no clear result. The fact that Windows
XP doesn't have it in its hardware database isn't really something to be
concerned with since that database was frozen in its current state several
years ago. I don't have a specific brand recommendation though I do prefer
either 3Com or Intel network cards when possible because I have rarely seen
problems with anything from either of them.
