Can't connect from Win 98

I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. On my network
at home I have Windows XP Pro and Windows 98 SE. Originally, Win98 could
access shares on XP and used the shared printer on XP. Now that is not
possible. No firewals are in operation. Win XP can access Win 98 (and a Win
2K Pro laptop), but neither of the other machines can access Win XP. They
can't even ping XP, although XP can ping them and they can ping each other.
Using XP for shared Internet connections enables DHCP and that works fine
for 98 and 2K.

The only traffic that Ethereal on XP sees is if generated by XP, and also
DHCP and ARP traffic from the other machines.

This problem has been bugging me for a while. I recently installed XP SP2
hoping that might fix the problem, but no luck. The firewall in SP2 has been
turned off completely or just disabled for the LAN connection and that does
not work. I have not been able to find anything in policies, etc.

Also, I have tried swapping around cables and hub ports (physical layer
issues) but they work fine between Win 98 and 2K Pro.

Any suggestions???

Not being able to ping by IP address is typically caused by a firewall.
Although you insist there is no firewall installed, there just might be one
you are unaware of on the XP PC.

Please run HiJackThis on the XP PC (the one that cannot be pinged) and post
the results of the log file in your reply.

HiJackThis is free from http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
