Win XP only partially loads

My win xp was working fine before I deleted the default HP
printer. after that, windows would only partially load. on
starting up, windows logo comes on with the progress bar
moving normally, but then the screen turns black and stays
that way. I can access windows in safe mode only. System
Restore is disabled so I can't use that. how do I correct
the problem? Many thanks.
