I've got a machine with XP on it which one day didn't finish booting.

It reaches up to just before the loading screen, displays a blue screen with white text for a small fraction of a second, and proceeds to reboot. Trying Safe Mode and Latest Working Configuration yelds the same result.

I'm still looking for my WinXP CD, will try booting it when i find it, but I've been led to think it isn't the OS's fault.

I added another computer's HDD (which has DOS on it) and booted from it, and the computer boots perfectly.

However, when I put in another HDD with a working version of XP in, the same thing happens: a blue screen for a tiny fraction of a second and then reboot.

I tried removing the sound card and LAN card to no avail (I don't have another video card to try that but it works fine in DOS)

Anybody have any idea of what can be the reason?

sure mate
do this
go to control panel then system
now click on advanced
then startup and recovery

now there is an option i want u to click on

'Automatically Restart' UNTICK this box

now when it goes to the bluescreen it will not restart
so u will get to see what the error messages says
take a note of it
and come back here post your findings

Well, in theory, yes, I suppose you're right.

But have you ever tried repairing a broken mbr? Or booting XP in any mode from recovery console?

Despite all MS's claims, I have have never, ever, ever, fixed a broken mbr within XP.

I've always had to do a fresh install.

I've fixed a few broken Win 98SE's, but XP - never - and I've tried a fair few times.

Has anybody ever had any luck with fixmbr etc? I'd be interested to hear if anybody has.

Thanks a lot guys :b:

I'll look for the CD (it must be buried around _somewhere_) and try that.
